That Ikoyi Club 1938 is the foremost sports and family club in Nigeria today cannot be again said. Indeed, our well-traveled members have ventured to assert that its uniqueness both in terms of membership and facilities is without comparison the world over. In this very unique and esteemed club is to be found a section, the Lawn Tennis Section, which is at once an embodiment of the essential character of the club and those qualities that defines its uniqueness. The Lawn Tennis Section can be equated to the hub of Ikoyi Club 1938. It has a membership of well over two thousand "ordinary members" (i.e. not counting spouse and junior members) and in this wise is second to none in the club. Its membership cuts across the whole spectrum of the society from the diplomatic corps to the professionals, from the business elite to the political and military top bras. It is the most active section in the club with an event calendar that is always packed full. Above all, events of the section always attract the crèmè de la crèmè of the society. The foremost objective of the Section in promoting the game of tennis as a Recreation fitness and competitive sport is being maximally realized through its variety of Tennis programmes, which embrace Tournaments, Coaching, Junior Developmental Clinics and other social related activities being organized on a periodic basis. The Lawn Tennis Section is a ONE BIG HAPPY FAMILY and highly delighted to welcome you into our fold.

Rules of the game

 

PREAMBLE

The Rules of Ikoyi Club 1938 are applicable to the Tennis Section and these Rules and Regulations set out hereunder are additional to Rule 35(a) of Ikoyi Club 1938

Tennis is a game that should be played in a spirit of good sportsmanship. An understanding of and commitment to the Rules and Regulations set out hereunder are part of each member's responsibilities.

 

THE COMMITTEE

There shall be a committee which shall be responsible for the management (including discipline) of the affairs of the Tennis Section of Ikoyi Club 1938. The Committee shall consist of a Chairman, a Vice Chairman, a Games Captain, Secretary, Treasurer an entertainment officer, Assistant Games Captain, a co-opted Lady Captain and co­-opted ex-officio members.

The Committee shall meet once a month and at any meeting, five members, one of whom must be either the Chairman or Vice Chairman shall form a quorum. The Chairman shall preside at all meetings and in his absence, the

Vice Chairman acts as Chairman.

 

GENERAL MEETINGS

A general meeting of the Tennis Section shall be held in February and August of every year. Notice of such meeting shall be posted on the Notice Board of the Tennis Section at least fourteen days before the date appointed for the meeting. At such meetings the Chairman shall present a report on the affairs of the Tennis Section

 

No subject shall be debated and no resolution shall be moved at any General Meeting without the consent of the Chairman unless notice thereof shall have been posted in the Tennis Section at least seven days before the meeting.

 

Any member wishing to propose any subject for debate or to move any resolution at a General Meeting must accordingly give notice thereof in writing to the Honorary Secretary, Tennis Section, at least seven days before the date of the meeting.

At any General Meeting, including a Special General Meeting, fifteen ordinary members who must have paid their club subscription and section subscription shall form a quorum and, subject to any changes in the Rules and Regulations, all questions arising shall be decided by a majority of votes of members present.

 

The Chairman or, in his absence, the Vice Chairman shall preside at all General Meetings, and failing these, the members present shall appoint - a Chairman. The Chairman shall have a casting vote.

 

Minutes of General Meetings shall be kept and posted on the Tennis Section Notice Board and may also be circulated to Tennis Section members.

 

SPECIAL GENERAL MEETINGS

The Committee may at anytime, and must whenever requisitioned in writing by a minimum of 30 members of the Tennis Section, convene a Special General Meeting. Notice of such a meeting together with the terms of the Resolutions to be considered, shall be forwarded to the Secretary and posted on the Tennis Section Notice Board not less than ten days before the date of the meeting. At any Special General Meeting 15 members shall form a quorum.

 

ELECTION OF THE CHAIRMAN AND COMMITTEE MEMBERS

The Chairman and other members of the Committee shall be elected by a show of hands or ballot at the Annual General Meeting held in February of each year.

Any member vying for any position shall have been a member of the Tennis Section for at least 4 years.

The Chairman and the Vice Chairman who must have served for at least 1 year in a Tennis Committee shall be elected from among the members.

If the post of the Chairman becomes vacant before an Annual General Meeting, the Vice Chairman shall act as the Chairman until the next Annual General Meeting. If any other post other than the Chairman "and Vice Chairman becomes vacant, the Committee shall co-opt any member of at least 4 years' standing to fill the position.

 

MEMBERSHIP

The right to play tennis on Ikoyi Club 1938. tennis courts shall be restricted to such members of Ikoyi Club 1938 who have paid the additional Tennis Section subscription prescribed by the rules of Ikoyi Club 1938.


All members are required to present their valid membership and identification cards to the booking clerk whenever requested.

 

GUESTS

Guests may be invited to use the Tennis Courts in accordance with Ikoyi Club 1938 Rule 5.

To avoid embarrassment members are reminded that guests are not allowed to play on

the courts except with the permission of the Tennis Section Committee Chairman or any member of the Tennis Committee. Guests must pay an entry fee ofN250.00 (or as may be prescribed from time to time) before they are allowed to use the courts excluding payments for floodlight.           .

 

Members shall register their guests with the booking clerk before the guests can be allowed the use of the courts. Guests shall be allowed to play only if PLAYING WITH SPONSORING MEMBER. When playing doubles, at least two players must be members.

 

JUNIOR I SENIOR MEMBERSHIP STATUS

This is a privilege extended to the best four junior members of the section (as may be determined in the under 18 junior tournament(s) for the preceding year) to use the facilities at all times of the day having fulfilled the following requirements.

Junior / senior members shall be limited to top 2 boys and top 2 girls.

Parents must be financial members of the section.

 

Selection of Junior I Senior members shall be based on performance in the under 18 years junior tournament(s) sanctioned by the Tennis Committee in the preceding year to the Award Night.

 

Privileges attached to the Junior I Senior membership status become effective from the day following the Award Night. The privileges shall lapse at the anniversary of the award night in the year following.

 

HOURS OF PLAY

The tennis nets shall be in position everyday. The ball boys shall be officially available between the hours of 8.00am to 11.00am and 4 .00 pm to 10.30pm. Green card carrying tennis members wishing to play on the court must pay on entering the Section a mandatory registration fee of Nl00.00 (or as may be prescribed from time to time) the payments must be recorded in a book provided for the purpose and a receipt obtained.

 

PEAK HOURS

The peak hours shall be as follows:

 

MONDAY TO FRIDAYS 4.00PM- 8.15PM

 

WEEKEND & PUBLIC HOLIDAYS 8.00AM - 11.00AM, 4.00PM- 8.15

 

TUESDAY AND THURSDAY are singles days

 

There shall be no coaching during peak hours.

 

COURT ALLOCATION

A member shall place his surname in a queue on the board under his/her court of choice.

 

Courts may be retained for 45 minutes only if other members are waiting to play. Members whose names are on the board but fail to present their partners when allocated courts shall forfeit their turn and their names will be dropped to the bottom of the queue. Members must vacate the court when their time is up and other members are sent to replace them irrespective of whether free courts exist elsewhere or not.

TENNIS OUTFIT (WHITE OR PREDOMINANTLY WHITE)

A player not wearing white or predominantly white tennis outfit will not be allocated a

Tennis court and he/she has absolutely no standing on the courts.

 

For the avoidance of doubt “predominantly White outfit” means that each item of clothing i.e. Shirt, short, dress, blouse, skirt, socks, and shoes shall be white or predominantly white.

The use of mobile phones on court is prohibited

Non-playing guests are not allowed on court.

Non-playing, members are only allowed on the courts to watch their wards upon wearing the prescribed tennis outfit.

   

USE OF THE TENNIS BAR/LOUNGE

The lounge shall be used strictly for relaxation by Members/Guests. Consequently the following inappropriate uses of the Lounges are prohibited.

Members/Guests in wet clothing or dresses are not allowed in the Lounge.

Unaccompanied children (under 15 years of age) are barred from the Lounge.

Smoking of any form or manner is forbidden in the Lounge.

Junior members are prohibited from the upstairs lounge.

 

ENFORCEMENT: All members of the Tennis Section are enjoined to enforce the rules governing civilise use of the Bar/Lounge for the good of all and sundry. Employees of the Tennis Section are also empowered to remind members of the rules governing the use of the Lounge.

 

JUNIOR MEMBERS

Junior members shall have priority of use of court No.8 at all times in accordance with rule (2.5) of Ikoyi Club 1938.

 

FLOODLIGHT/PRE-BOOKING

Flood light tennis is available between the hours of 8.15pm to 10.30pm and must be booked.

A member and a coach shall have standing on courts 4 to 8 between 8.15pm and 10.30pm.

If a booked court is not taken out within 15 minutes of the booked time, others waiting for a court may use it for the remaining period.

 

Members must be made aware that if they do not keep a scheduled appointment with a coach, they still must pay the coaching fee. If a coach does not keep an appointment, he may be disciplined. The disappointed member can see the head coach who will arrange for a substitute coach of the same standard.

Ball boys will be available, but members are responsible for payment for their services at the flat rate of Nl00.00 for each ball boy (or as may be approved from time to time)

COACHING

Coaching in the tennis section shall be headed by the head coach, to be assisted by the senior coaches, coaches and assistant coaches. There shall not be more than ten coaches assisting the head coach.

 

Coaching shall be available in the section from 8.00am to 4.00pm and from 8.15pm to 10.30pm except on Saturdays and public holidays.

The approved fee for the head coach, senior coaches, coaches and assistant coaches are N900.00, N850.00, N750.00, and N700.00 respectively (or as may be approved from time to time) for a 45 minutes coaching session. The section shall be entitled to 15% of all Senior Coaches, Coaches I Assistant coaches fees.

 

DISCIPLINE

 

The Tennis Section Committee is empowered to take any disciplinary measure it deems fit against any member who disregards these rules or whose conduct in or out of the Section's premises is, in the opinion of the Committee, considered injurious to the character or interest of the Section. The Tennis Section Committee may, on the other hand, refer such a matter to the General Committee of Ikoyi Club 1938 for action under the Club Rule on Discipline. Any member suspended under this Rule shall not be entitled to enter the Section's premises during the period of suspension.

 

TOURNAMENTS

The committee may, on any day, reserve courts for tournaments and for matches against other Clubs.The Games Captain or in his absence the Vice Games Captain shall be responsible for all tournaments organized by the Section. In the event of dispute the Games Captain's decision will be final; such decision will be based on the rules of Tennis as laid down by the International Tennis Federation (except where exceptional rules are laid down prior to the commencement of any particular tournament).

SECTION'S ACTIVITIES

All courts shall be closed to play when there is an advertised Section's activities and AGM in which case only Courts 5 - 8 may be allowed for use.

 

FINANCE

The Treasurer shall account for the funds of the Tennis Section, which shall comprise such entrance fees or donations for tennis tournaments, and functions as may be prescribed by the Committee. The funds shall be applied by the Committee to the wages of ball boys, the purchase of trophies, prizes and tennis balls and to the provision of hospitality, but not to the maintenance and upkeep of the courts. The Treasurer shall submit a full statement of the tennis accounts to each Annual General Meeting and the statement shall be forwarded to the Honorary Treasurer of Ikoyi Club 1938 for incorporation into the General Accounts.

MISCELLANEOUS

Only non-alcoholic beverages in plastic containers are allowed to be served or be brought into the courts.

Nomination for all elective offices as well as appointments shall be open to all nationalities.

The Chairman or an appointed member of the tennis section shall serve as one of the members of the Committee of Ikoyi club 1938 in accordance with rule 12(a)
